Mechanical properties of Nylon 66/glass-fiber composite used for cylinder head cover for automobiles were investigated using dynamic fatigue, tensile and Izod impact tests under various environmental conditions. Tensile and impact specimens were exposed to three environmental conditions, heat-resistance, engine oil and temperature-humidity cycle, respectively. In addition, dynamic fatigue test was carried out to determine the prediction of life-time under fatigue condition. Based on this study, under three environmental conditions, the nylon 66/glass-fiber composite exhibited increase in tensile strength by 15-20 %, while reduction in impact strength up to 17-24 %. The stress vs. cycle (S-N) curve determined by dynamic fatigue test was very useful to predict the fatigue life-time of nylon 66/glass-fiber composite. |
