The colorimetric sensors have excellent performance in changing their colors for distinguishing chemicals or detecting environmental changes. Structural color materials show a stable and a stimuli-responsive optical properties under various external stimuli which is potentially useful as a colorimetric sensor. We fabricated structural color material consisting of multi-layered polydopamine nanoparticles(PdNPs) for a highly sensitive solvatochromic sensor. Because PdNP has a high refractive index and good swelling capability, the thin film interference color of the PdNP thin film exhibits solvatochromic behaviors in five different alcohols. In addition, the PdNP thin film shows different reflection signals in similar physicochemical properties of alcohols. When the solvents are dried, the dynamic reflection spectrum shows information about the diffusion rate and surface tension of the alcoholic solvents. Using the liquor on the market, we demonstrate that PdNP thin film can be used as solvatochromic sensor. |
