Preparation and Characterization of Polystyrene/Silica Nanocomposite Particles by UV-induced Graft Polymerization |
초록 |
Polystyrene/Silica nanocomposite particles were prepared by UV-induced graft polymerization of styrene onto silica surface and the resulting monodispersed particles were subjected to characterization. Scanning electron microscopy analysis indicated less homopolymerization of styrene monomer (formation of ungrafted polystyrene) thus decreasing the agglomeration of the composites when the silica-initiator-solvent reaction mixture was pre-activated by UV-irradiation before the introduction of monomer. The grafted-layer thickness verses reaction time was investigated. It was found that after 40 minutes of irradiation, the grafted layer thickness decreased due to the degradation of grafted polystyrene. The maximum particle size increase was from 267 nm to 371 nm, resulting in a 170% volume increase. Thermogravimetric analysis of the composite particles indicated the polymer content in good agreement with SEM analysis. FT-Raman spectroscopy and XPS studies also confirmed the successful graft polymerization of styrene onto the silica surface. |
