Anisotropic peptide nanoparticles have been of great interest because they can have distinct multi-compartments with different physical and chemical properties while having biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this study, a new class of anisotropic nanoparticles of environmentally responsive elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) was prepared. The biphasic ELP nanofibers with acrylic moieties were first synthesized by electrohydrodynamic (EHD) co-jetting with side by side needle geometry, and then chemically stabilized via UV irradiation. Finally, the biphasic ELP nanofibers were spontaneously disintegrated into the biphasic ELP nanoparticles when incubated in aqueous conditions due to selective chemical crosslinking of ELP chains. Conceptually, this study could establish a facile method to design and prepare anisotropic peptide nanoparticles for advanced molecular imaging and drug delivery systems. |
