Improving solubility and processibility of drug is important in the pharmaceutical industry. Hydrogels have received attention as tools for tailoring drug delivery strategy. Hydrogels have cross-linked networks of hydrophilic polymers and a significant amount of water. The property of drug confined in hydrogel networks could be controlled, which are applicable to various biomedical areas. In this study, crystallization with hydrogel-mixed system enables unique drug crystallization: The gelation of alginate occurring in presence of mixed solution of calcium chloride and sildenafil locked up the drug crystals in hydrogel. As a result, sildenafil crystal size in hydrogel was significantly reduced, and sildenafil in the hydrogel shows fast release tendency. |
