Multi–walled carbon nanotubes functionalized with amino groups (MWCNT–NH2) were prepared via chemical modification of carboxyl groups introduced on the multi–walled carbon nanotubes surface. The synthesized materials were embedded in polymer resin, epoxy–terminated dimethyl siloxane, and then the untreated micro–aluminum nitride (micro–AlN) particles were added to this resin, whereby the composites filled with aminated MWCNT and micro–AlN were fabricated. As a result, the thermal diffusivity and conductivity of all composites continuously improved with increasing MWCNT–NH2 content and micro–AlN filler loading. A thermal conductivity of 3.8 W/mK was achieved at MWCNT–NH2 loading of 3 wt % and micro–AlN loading of 70 wt % with flexibility maintained. This result is due to the high aspect ratio of the MWCNT–NH2 which is feasible for establishment of a heat conductive percolation network between micro–AlN particles. |
