Benzoic acid is one of additives for automotive coolant, in order to improve the corrosion resistance. In this study, the effect of benzoic acid on the scale deposition and crevice corrosion of thermostat system has been investigated. Observations using energy dispersive spectroscopy and pyrolysis-GC/MS indicate that benzoic acid has a strong possibility facilitating the scale deposition and crevice corrosion of thermostat system, due to its low solubility in ethylene glycol-water mixtures. Finally, the corrosion mechanism of thermostat system is clearly addressed. |
