The Department of BioSystems has been newly established in the year 2002 within the College of Engineering of KAIST. It aims to provide educational programs that cultivate highly qualified professional who has the competency to create noble knowledge and accomplish interdisciplinary research in the unexplored fields where biology, medical science, and engineering are integrated. The BioSystems Programs at KAIST are concerned with the study of biologically oriented information systems using engineering solutions and tools, and the study of biologically motivated intelligent systems for engineering purpose. Special emphasis will put on the three major areas: BioInformatics, BioElectronics, and BioMEMS. The field of BioMEMS applies MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) to solve biological and medical problems as well as biological structures and principles to solve engineering MEMS problems. We are studying the characterization of biomaterials and structures, the quantitative analysis of biological functions, and underlying principles, and are developing the microelectromechanical tools and methods for the extraction, control and manipulation of bioinformation. Related research areas include the design and analysis, materials and fabrication process, testing and measurement, integration and application technologies for biosensors, actuators, nanobio devices, and nano- or micro-electromechanical systems (NEMS or MEMS). |
