The structure information of swollen poly(n-isopropylacrylamide)-laponite hydrogel by γ-ray irradiation was investigated. Hydrogels were prepared by three methods; one is synthesized by direct γ-ray irradiation to the monomer/clay solution, another is by radical from γ-irradiated clay solution. The other is by potassium persulfate (KPS) initiator. Three hydrogels have different swelling abilities as result of structural difference. γ-ray generates radicals and forms 3D networks without any cross-linker. The existence of clay cross-linker affects swelling abilities of hydrogels however, the main factor is the use of γ-ray. The saturation ratio and time of swelling were investigated, and the structural changes by swelling ratio were followed by the independent techniques: Rheometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The combination of these methods enabled us to describe in detail structure of PNIPAM-clay hydrogels. |
