Li-ion batteries(LIBs) have been used as power sources in portable IT devices since they were commercialized in 1991. LIB is expanding its application as an essential device for large power sources. Although the energy density(ED) was only 90 Wh/kg at the beginning, it has reached 240 Wh/kg. As the next-generation secondary battery overcoming ED limit of LIB, the secondary battery adopting lithium metal is attracting attention. A lot of efforts have been made to use lithium metal anode since the 1970s. However, because of high reactivity with electrolyte, deterioration of cell life due to dendritic growth, and severe short-circuit, Li metal secondary battery (LMB) have failed to be commercialized. Recently, some technologies have been proposed for surface treatment/protective film/ electrolyte additives for use of lithium metal anode. In this presentation, we will discuss the R&D development trend of secondary battery based on lithium metal anode and its future technical prospects. |
