For PLA, a polymeric flame retardant, PBPP2, was synthesized via two-steps polymerization process and its chemical structure was characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and the fourier transform infrared. PLA was prepared via the ring opening polymerization. Then, the flame retardancy of neat PLA and flame retardant PLA film which were prepared via solution casting method were evaluated by the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and the vertical burning test. To investigate the effect of PBPP2 on the thermal stability of PLA, the thermogravimetric analysis was conducted. When the only 3 wt% PBPP2 was loaded to PLA, the LOI was increased 23 % to 30 % in comparison to neat PLA, and the maximum thermal degradation temperature was increased. Also, we obtained the information about the mechanical properties using universal testing machine, and this result showed that 3 wt% PBPP2 could act as plasticizer. That is, 3 wt% PBPP2 could solve the problems, flammable and brittle properties of PLA. |
