초록 Perfluorinated grafted ionomers have been used as one of potential polymer electrolyte for fuel cell due to their high proton conductivity, excellent mechanical properties and chemical/ electrochemical stability. However, they have crucial drawbacks in practical applications as the electrolyte membrane, which are high methanol permeability over 10-6cm2/s, the steep drop of the proton conductivity at higher temperature and/or low humidity.
To overcome described disadvantages of perfluorinated ionomer such as Nafion™, many alternatives have been investigated and studied. Among those, sulfonated polyimide show excellent mechanical/ thermal stability, high proton conductivity and relatively high methanol permeability close to that of Nafion™.
In this study, various sulfonated polyimides with the rigid, rod-, grafted- and crosslinked structure were synthesized and characterized structurally by IR, NMR. The formation of the ion cluster within different polymer chains was observed by SAXS. The structural effect on prepared sulfonated polyimides with different chemical structures was examined at the viewpoint of proton conductivity and methanol permeability, related to the formation ion cluster size.
