Synthesis of Poly(norbornene carboxylic acid) Binders for Silicon Anodes |

Ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) is well-known to synthesize well-defined polymers with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution. Herein, we investigated the potential of poly(norbornene carboxylic acid) (PNCA) for Si anode binders to alleviate the volume expansion during charge and discharge. A series of PNCA having various molecular weights were synthesized by ROMP with third-generation Grubb’s catalyst. In particular, we examine the electrochemical performance of Si nanoparticle anodes prepared with hydrogenated and non-hydrogenated PNCA binder as compared to conventional poly(acrylic acid) binder. Our study can provide a useful guideline to rationally design polymer binders for Si anodes that can exhibit high capacity and long-term stability. |
