Optical properties of a two-photon absorption (TPA) chromophore, 1,4-bis(4'-(N,N-bis(6''-(N,N,N-trimethylammonium)hexyl)amino)-styryl)benzene tetrabromide (C1) upon complexation with an anionic diblock copolymer PEGm-b-AMPSn (where m = 45 and n = 70 or 8) and a cationic surfactant CTAB has been studied as a potential fluorophore for two-photon fluorescence microscopy. Electrostatic interaction between cationic CTAB and anionic PEGm-b-AMPSn facilitates the formation of controllable aggregated structure (CAS). Incorporation of C1 into the nonpolar microenvironment of the electrostatic CAS improved the optical properties of C1, as compared to those of in water. In water, fluorescence quantum yield (η) of C1 (0.32) was increased to 0.41 and 0.67 accompanied with 30 nm and 37 nm PL spectral shift, in the presence of PEG45-b-AMPS8/CTAB and PEG45-b-AMPS70/CTAB, respectively. The linear and nonlinear optical properties of the encapsulated C1 will be discussed in detail. |
