Thermal annealing is most used to develop microphase separated nano-structure of block copolymer (BCP). By heating a BCP above the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the blocks, the polymer chains gain mobility, and spontaneous phase separation occurs toward thermodynamically stable phase. At high temperature, thermal degradation of polymers may occur and it may take long for high molecular weight BCPs to achieve well-developed morphology. These problems can be alleviated by solvent annealing. By placing a BCP in a solvent vapor atmosphere, the BCP absorbs the vapor and swells reducing Tg of the BCP and enhancing the mobility. While solvent annealing facilitate the development of microphase at low temperature, the swelling and deswelling processes of BCP make the phase development process complicated which remains to be elucidated to optimize the solvent annealing method. In this poster, out recent efforts to elucidate the solvent annealing process of BCP will be presented. |
