Discotic liquid crystalline (DLC) materials based on triphenylene core have been attracting interest due to their negative birefringence, which are promising for application in optical devices such as optical compensation films for wide-viewing angle in LCD. To obtain thin and efficient compensation films, we have investigated new high birefringence discotic liquid crystals which have acetylene groups on triphenylene core. And, in order to control the liquid crystalline phase to nematic phase, we introduced a benzoate linker between the triphenylene core and cross-linkable acrylate terminated alkyl side chain. In this presentation, we’ll report the synthesis and phase transition properties of triphenylene based discotic mesogens. And, we’ll also demonstrate the measurement of birefringence of them. |
