Nature provides broad examples of functional materials like polyphenols often found in various fruits. Polyphenols are bulky biopolymers having structures like DOPA and useful for adsorbing proteins. Herein, we have developed chemical modification and its stabilization method for preparation of HA-polyphenol derivatives. Five polyphenols were successfully attached to hyaluronic acid (HA) using epichlorohydrin (ECH) and stabilizer. The several possible byproducts were reduced using stabilizer and purification process. 1H NMR, and FT-IR confirms the covalent bonding, whereas UV assay highlights its substitution rates of polyphenols. The free radical stabilizer was inhibiting the degradation of HA backbone which shown in intrinsic viscosity measurement. Adhesion strength of HA derivative by applying uniaxial tensile strain in wet state have almost double than the neat HA macromolecules. This improved adhesion behavior of HA derivatives is because of the introduced DOPA structure through polyphenols. |
