Novel Colorimetric, Multi-Sensing Platform Based on Block Copolymer Grafted Graphene Quantum Dots: Its Sensing Behavior for Temperature, pH, and Metal Ions |

We developed a colorimetric multi-sensing platform based on block copolymer grafted graphene quantum dots (GQDs). In our system, GQD cores were coated with fluorescent, thermally-responsive poly(7-(4-(acryloyloxy)butoxy)coumarin)-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (P7AC-b-PNIPAAm) block copolymers. The colorimetric sensing response to temperature change was generated by Förster resonance energy transfer between green-emitting GQDs and blue-emitting coumarins in the P7AC block, which was controlled through the manipulation of the PNIPAAm chain confirmation that responds to temperature changes. In addition, the functional groups on the controlled surface of the GQD core provided the block copolymer coated GQDs with quantitative, colorimetric switching behavior in response to pH as well as different types of metal ions. The detail mechanism of responsive behavior of the GQD sensors was investigated using time-resolved photoluminescence, dynamic light scattering and microscopy measurements. |
