Low hydrothermal stability was a critical problem hampering practical applications of the MCM-41-type mesoporous molecular sieves found recently. The hydrothermal stability has been found to improve remarkably when various salts are added to reaction mixtures during the synthesis of MCM-41. The salts’ effect is also attributable to the improvement in the hydrothermal stability of a disordered mesoporous molecular sieve KIT-1 compared with MCM-41. These findings are expected to be useful not only for practical applications of the materials but also understanding the synthesis mechanism of the mesoporous materials.
