Synthesis and characterization of organic semiconducting polymers based on benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene for use in organic photovoltaic cells |

A series of semiconducting polymers containing benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDT) derivatives has been synthesized through a Stille coupling polymerization. Three kinds of BDT-based monomers were copolymerized with thiophene or alkylbithiophene co-monomers to give fully conjugated polymers for use in organic photovoltaic device as electron donors. The highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) of the synthesized polymers were determined by using cyclic voltammetry (CV). The Optical band gap energies of the polymers were in the range of 1.83-2.12 eV, depending on the polymer structure. The bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic cells were fabricated using the conjugated polymer as electron donors and PC70BM as an electron acceptor. One of the fabricated devices showed a power conversion efficiency of 2.73%, with an open-circuit voltage of 0.72 V, a short-circuit current of 7.73 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 46.33% under AM 1.5 global (1.5 G) illumination conditions (100 mW/cm2). |
