A smart lab-on-paper biosensing technology is a next-generation point-of-care testing (POCT) which requires rapidity, affordability, usability, and sensitivity. In here, we present representative smart lab-on-paper biosensing technologies that enabled automated multistep reaction for highly sensitive detection and membrane patterning for multiple detection. We developed a novel chemiluminescence lateral flow immunosensor (LFI)-based automatic enzyme immunosorbent assay system using a functional membrane or a polymer. An asymmetric polysulfone membrane enabled a delayed-release of chemiluminescence substrates after immunoreaction. Meanwhile, a water-swellable polymer was used to switch flows from immunoreaction to chemiluminescence substrates. In a model study, the sensor was validated by measuring C-reactive protein level in human serum. We hope that the smart biosensor based on lab-on-paper technology will contribute to diagnostics and eventually improve human health in recent future. |
