Keratins are divided into α-keratin constituting skin, hairs of mammals and β-keratin constituting nails, feathers, hooves, claws, scales of reptile. There are many studies of α-keratin, but there are only a few studies of β-keratin. Keratin fibers derived from bird feathers have potential to be good fillers for commercial polymer composites. Feather keratin has hierarchically hollow structures, low density, good mechanical properties, and hydrophobicity. In this poster, feather keratin fibers were washed, sterilized, and extruded with polypropylene to be used as fillers for polypropylene composites. This keratin/PP composite has many advantageous properties such as biodegradability, sound absorption, thermal barrier, and weight lightening properties without decreasing mechanical performances. |
