Photonic band gap (PBG) materials based on crystalline structures have been of great interest in the various fields of science and technology. Recently, it has been reported that nonperiodic or even random structures could exhibit PBGs at certain conditions. Quasi-amorphous photonic materials exhibit angle-independent and non-iridescent photonic colors which are considered to be useful for their applications in sensors and displays. In this work, we demonstrated that quasi-amorphous colloidal structures exhibiting PBGs in the visible region can be exclusively formed by suppressing crystallization and controlling the size of nanoparticles(NPs). The particles were sequentially functionalized with APTES(3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane), and imidazolium-based ionic liquid. We have found that SiO2 colloidal NPs dispersed in organic solvents showed characteristic angle-independent structural colors when the concentration was sufficiently high and crystallization was effectively suppressed. |
