Proton exchange membrane (PEM) based on multi-block copolymer architecture can have much reduced water swelling behavior compared with those of random copolymers, which is important in maintaining dimensional stability of PEMs under fully hydrated condition at high temperature. We prepared sulfonated hydrophilic oligomers containing rigid phenylene sulfone moiety to reduce water swelling and non-sulfonated hydrophobic oligomers to enhance the mechanical property of the membrane in various molecular weights. Using these oligomers, multi-block copolymers with controlled IECs were synthesized by condensation reaction. The synthesized polymers were characterized in terms of H-NMR, IEC, water uptake, dimensional change, proton conductivity. |
