Perylenediimide-based chromonic mesogen (PDI-CM) was synthesized for the multichromatic thin film polarizer (TFP). However, PDI core has low solubility and processability due to their strong π-π interactions. Therefore, introducing ionic groups and polymerizable groups into the PDI core improves drawbacks. Based on the results of ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and degree of polarization (DOP), PDI-based TFP showed higher transmittance when the polarization direction was parallel to the shear direction than perpendicular. Also, PDI-based TFP exhibited DOP values of 99.04, 21.66, and 5.21% at 500, 600, and 700 nm in the neutral state, while in the reduced state, 99.98, 95.58 and 87.86% higher DOP values exhibited at the same wavelength, respectively. Therefore, these characteristics show the fabricated PDI-based TFP can be applied to sign encryption as well as smart window.
