Mechanical property enhancement of Aligned Carbon Nanotubes /Polymer composite |

A high alignment and aspect ratio of carbon nanotube (CNT) sheets was realized by forest drawing process. However, waviness of CNTs in the sheets are main weaknesses restricting their reinforcing efficiency in composites. We proposed a simple and efficient synthesis method for controlling the waviness of CNT arrays by adopting a two phase catalytic system. Using this CNT forest, we were synthesized super aligned CNT sheet and investigated their relationship between morphology of CNT and spinability. In addition, the synthesized CNT sheets have been functionalized by thermal treatment with various conditions. We have then observed experimentally that the interaction properties between CNTs surface and polymer can enhance the mechanical properties of composites. The elastic modulus and ultimate tensile stress were increased compared to those of the untreated sample. These result exhibit much higher Young`s modulus and tensile strength than those of other previous work at the same Vf%. |
