A study of blue phase transition behaviors depending on boundary conditions |
초록 |
Blue phase (BP) is one of the most interesting fields in liquid crystal science because of their unusual chirality resulted from double twist cylinder(DTC)s. And blue phase is defined as the phase that stands between cholesteric and isotropic phase, and there are three kinds of BPs, two species are cubic (BPI & BPII) and other one is amorphous one (BPIII). Among these BPs, BPIII is easily affected by external environment such as physical conditions, temperature gradient and surface treatment. It is well-known that thermal phase transition can be modified by chemical synthesis, but our experimental results showed that we could control phase transitions of BP phase under different boundary conditions. From polarized optical microscopy studies, we observed that the domains of BPIII are generated evenly under confined geometries of micro-channels. This important phenomenon can give us a hint to understand exotic properties of BP phases. |
