The search for fresh water-to drink, to bathe in, to irrigate crops- is a problem as old as civilization. Desalination of water, especially of salty seawater, is effected almost exclusively by evaporating of the salty water and subsequently condensing the arising vapors being free of salt. There are also two methods for large-scale production of desalted water-distillation and reverse osmosis. Herein we report the development of a new process to desalineate saltwater using melt crystallization. In this study, melt crystallization and sweating operations were carried out for saltwater. Optimum conditions were set for desalination of pure water from saltwater. The operating parameters investigated were salt composition, cooling temperature, cooling rate, and sweating conditions. |
