New silicon nanoparticulates have been synthesized and used to detect nitroaromatic compounds, such as picric acid, trinitrotoluene (TNT), dinitrotoluene (DNT), and nitrobenzene. The detection method involves measurement of the quenching of photoluminescence of the copolymers by the analyte. Photoluminescence quenching of copolymers in water solutions with nitrobenzene, DNT, TNT, and picric acid were measured. The quenching efficiency of PTPS nanoparticulates for nitroaromatic compounds is better than that of PTPS polymer. Silicon nanoparticles have been obtained from the sonication of luminescent porous silicon and used to detect explosives. Silicon nanocrystals have been synthesized and characterized by FTIR, UV-vis absorption, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. A possible application as sensors will be presented. |
