Stem cell niche has recently received the spotlight in tissue engineering. Stem cell niche is a specific microenvironment where stem cells are located in vivo, which interacts with stem cells to regulate cell fate. Stem cell niches maintain stem cells in a quiescent state. In-vivo, stem cell niches create specialized microenvironments and various factors are important to the stem niche; consisting of soluble and surface-bound signaling factors, and cell-cell interaction with stem cell niche support cells. Many studies have attempted to create stem cell niche using polymer scaffolds modification with ECM molecules, signaling factors, or other bioactive molecules. In this study, stem cells were cultured on the cell-cell interactive molecules modified alginate hydrogels, and the cell-instructive polymer scaffolds were used to create novel biomimetic systems for engineering stem cell niche that can control stem cell quiescence, self-renewal, and differentiation. |
