Improving drug properties by using the crystal engineering has been considered as an important strategy in the pharmaceutical industry. For co-crystallization, materials of low molecular weights such as nicotinamide and saccharin have been used to control the properties. However, these materials are generally not preferable as excipients in drug formulations. In here, polymers generally regarded as safe were used to engineer the properties of natural polyphenols, which are well known for their anti-oxidant property and bioavailability. Polyphenols can be used for protecting human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) from oxidative stress. The polymer-directed crystallization of catechin was performed by using a cooling crystallization method in presence of polymers: A solution of catechin and polymer was cooled until catechin crystal separated. In case of using PEI and HPMC, the morphology of catechin crystals has been changed significantly. SEM and XRD showed interactions between catechin and polymers. The polymer-directed crystallization method could be used for controlling polyphenol properties, and such changes could have an effect on the release behaivor of polyphenols. |
