Production of bio-based energy from renewable resources is becoming more important as fossil resources diminish and global climate changes threaten environmental safety and human life. In particular, liquid transport biofuels have been receiving increased attention due to their greater demand than any others. Among them, butanol has been considered as a better biofuel than ethanol because of its higher energy density and less hygroscopy. Also, methylethyl ketone(MEK), which is hehydrated from 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BD), with a high calorific value of 41,800 kJ/kg has been proposed as a liquid fuel additive or gasoline blend stock that either alone or with other alcohols enhances octane rating. In an industrial viewpoint, the production of butanol and 2,3-BD by microbial fermentation is presented. |
