Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) / chitosan aerogels and hydrogels fabricated by nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) with subsequent solvent exchange method |

PHB has been extensively studied owing to its good biodegradability and biocompatibility. However, PHB suffers from poor mechanical properties, the lack of hydrophilicity which limit its applications in biomedical field. In this study, Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/chitosan (CS) hydrogels and aerogels were fabricated NIPS with subsequent solvent-exchange and freeze-drying processes. The hybrid aerogels exhibited higher compressive strength and surface hydrophilicity compared to pure PHB aerogels. Although the neat PHB hydrogel was not syringe-injectable, the CS-modified PHB hydrogels became syringe-injectable and self-healing due to the improved hydrophilicity of gel network. These PHB/CS were evaluated in situ as an injectable drug delivery system using doxorubicin (DOX) and Indomethacin (IDM) as a model drug. The drug loaded hydrogel exhibited notable cytotoxicity against A549 cells, which suggest the newly developed hydrogel to be a promising candidate vehicle for the drug delivery. |
