Improvement of Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Double Metal Cyanide Catalyzed Aliphatic Polycarbonates through Graft Copolymerization |

The low cost and low toxicity of carbon dioxide (CO2) make it an attractive industrial chemical reagent, so methods for using CO2 as a practical carbon feedstock are being aggressively investigated. One of the most intensely studied processes involves the use of CO2 in the synthesis of polymers, especially polycarbonates. Terpolymerization of CO2 with alicyclic epoxides has been carried out by using double metal cyanide catalyst with excellent catalytic activity. In order to improve various properties of synthesized polycarbonates, we modified the pendant vinyl groups on polymer chain via thiol-ene click reaction and epoxidation/ring-opening reaction. We attached molecules whichs have multi-functional groups such as hydroxyl and amino groups. Mechanical and thermal properties of the resultant polycarbonates were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, universal testing machine, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and various spectroscopic techniques. |
