Elastomers with self-healing effects are important smart materials having potential applications in wearable devices. Here, a novel elastomer with self-healing and shape memory effect was developed by blending maleated ethylene vinyl acetate (mEVA) with small amount of sulfonated polyaniline (sPANI) copolymer. The sPANI copolymer was synthesized by oxidative copolymerization o-aminobenzenesulfonic acid with aniline by using ammonium persulfate as an oxidant and aniline dimer as a catalyst. Molau test, SEM, FTIR, DSC, DMA, tensile test and melt viscosity measurement were conducted to characterize the structure and properties of the blends. The results revealed that sPANI copolymer was grafted onto EVA via a chemical reaction between maleic anhydride of mEVA with amine of sPANI copolymer, and the sPANI chains grafted onto the EVA induced extensive hydrogen-bonding networks in the blends. The blends exhibit elastomeric properties with both shape memory and scratch healing effects under heating above Tm of the EVA phase. |
