This work reports preparation of Cr-doped TiO2 (Cr-TiO2) and its application to a photoanode in a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). Pure TiO2 and 10 mol% Cr-TiO2 sol were obtained via hydrolysis followed by hydrothermal process at 250 °C for 12 h. The pure TiO2 was firstly coated on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate by using a polymer binder and sintered at 500 °C for 30 min. The Cr-TiO2 was deposited on the pure TiO2 layer through same procedure, therefore two different layers (double layer) were employed as a photoanode of a DSSC. We found that photovoltaic efficiency was improved by ca. 19.7% when the double layer was adopted instead of using TiO2 alone (TiO2 Vm= 0.66 V, Jm= 10.7 mA/cm2, Voc= 0.79 V, Jsc = 13.0 mA/cm2, FF = 68.7%, η = 7.1%; double layer Vm = 0.67 V, Jm = 12.7 mA/cm2, Voc = 0.79 V, Jsc = 15.2 mA/cm2, FF = 70.7%, η = 8.5%). We assumed that this improvement was caused by the Cr-TiO2 layer hindering charge recombination and the double layer was further characterized to clarify the function of the Cr-TiO2 layer. |
