Stem cells have been widely studied as a powerful source for cell therapy because of their high self-renewal activity and high telomerase activity that may provide an unlimited supply of target cells. Despite the clinical prospect, it is necessary that several problemssuch asestablishment of clinical grade stem cells, efficient differentiation toward specific cell lines, functional recovery, and regulation of immune rejection. Recently, we have developed a novel culture technique using porous membranes for stem cell expansion as well as differentiation. This porous membrane technique would provide a useful tool to prepare potentially clinical grade stem cells in the future of regenerative medicine. |
