Alginate, a polyelectrolyte with many characteristics such as biological origin, biodegradability, and biocompatibility has been widely used as attractive natural resources in biomedical applications. In this study, we prepared a hybrid solution of sodium alginate, silver nanoparticles, and natural antioxidants to produce insoluble calcium alginate for the application as a wound dressing material with antimicrobial activity. The characteristics of products were examined by transmission electron microscopy(TEM), UV-VIS spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction(XRD), and light scattering for a particle size analysis. The hydrodynamic size of silver nanoparticles is controlled by alginate and silver concentrations. The presence of silver in the alginate-silver hybrids was confirmed by XRD and TEM. It was confirmed that alginate-silver hybrids have antimicrobial activity by MIC test and AATCC antimicrobial activity test. |
