Over the past several decades, epoxy resins have been considered as the most superior thermosetting due to its excellent mechanical strength, outstanding adhesion to most surface and chemical resistance. However, due to their high brittleness, its application has been largely restricted. In order to overcome this drawback, there were many attempts to give epoxy resin toughening by introducing the interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) with polyurethanes (PU). In this study, cross-linked hydroxy urethane (HPU) was incorporated into cured epoxy resin for the formation of IPN with epoxy resin and it is expected to bring the toughening of epoxy resin. Future more, self-healing property of IPN based on exchange reaction between HPU and epoxy is also expected. |
