Effect of Silica Nanoparticle Size on the Bending Strength and Humidity Resistance of Sand Mold with Sodium Silicate Solution |

The sand mold with the sodium silicate solution has low strength in humid condition because of the low humidity resistance of the sodium silicate. The addition of silica can improve the humidity resistance. In this study, the effect of silica nanoparticle size on the strength and humidity resistance of sand mold with inorganic binders was investigated. The inorganic binders were prepared by adding the silica nanoparticles with different size into sodium silicate solution. The sand molds for the bending strength test were prepared by mixing the artificial sand and the inorganic binder. The addition of silica nanoparticles improved the humidity resistance of sand molds compared to absence of silica due to increase of SiO2/Na2O ratio. As the increase of silica size, the bending strength of sand mold increased due to formation of discrete silica aggregates with high surface area. Thus, we suggest the size variation of silica nanoparticles affects the bending strength of sand molds. |
