A perylene-based lyotropic chromic liquid crystal (PBLLC) was newly designed and synthesized for the fabrication of macroscopically oriented and patterned thin film polarizer (PTFP). The phase behavior and molecular self-assembly structure of PBLLC were studied by spectroscopic, scattering and microscopic techniques. After mechanically shearing the PBLLC in aqueous solution on the flexible polymer substrates, we fabricated the PTFP by etching the unpolymerized regions selectively blocked by photomask during the photopolymerization. Chemical and mechanical stabilities were confirmed and its surface morphology was further investigated by optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and three-dimensional surface nanoprofiler. The flexible PBLLC PTFP can allow us to develop the advanced flexible optoelectronic devices.
