An application of electrodialysis(ED) is desalinating the brackish water. But serious fouling phenomena such as scaling are often found, decreasing the efficiency of the process. Therefore it is important to investigate the fouling phenomena. In light of practical application, we performed experiments with an automatic ED apparatus which was operated in semi-continuous process. The membranes used in this study were a Neosepta AMX and CMX. Brackish water was used as a feed and an initial concentrate solution. First, we investigated the I-V curve to determine the limiting current density(LCD). The LCD was found to be about 5.6A. In the desalination experiment the feed was diluted to 1mS/cm in conductivity which agrees with a basis of drinking water. When several batches of feed were diluted to 1mS/cm repeatedly, the conductivity of concentrate reached 53mS/cm in the steady state. When concentrate became 40mS/cm, overflowing started in the concentrate part. During the operation, power consumption and fouling phenomena were examined. The hardness material in the brackish water didn’t cause serious fouling under the conditions investigated. |
