Study on the Cycling Performance of the Lithium-Ion Batteries Assembled with Thermally Stable Ceramic-Coated Separators |

Lithium-ion batteries(LIBs) have rapidly dominated the market of power sources for portable electronic devices and hybrid electric vehicles. In these batteries, a separator is a critical component which affects battery performances. Most of separators used in the LIBs are based on microporous polyolefin. Although they offer excellent mechanical strength and chemical stability, their thermal stability is not enough to guarantee the temperature-related safety issue. In this work, we tried to improve the thermal stability and wettability of the microporous polyethylene membranes. These separators exhibited excellent thermal stability by retaining stable dimensions at high temperature. Due to the high hydrophilicity of polymer binder and high surface of the small inorganic particles, they showed good wettability with non-aqueous liquid electrolytes. With these ceramic-coated separators, we assembled lithium-ion cells and their cycling performance were evaluated. |
