Effects of Surface Energetics on IFSS of Carbon Fibers by Various Modification Methods |

We studied the effects of various surface oxidation treatments of carbon fiber on interfacial adhesion to matrices. Conventional surface treatment methods have been attempted for carbon fiber, but most require very long processing times, which may increase cost. In this work, carbon fibers were oxidized with various conditions in acid-base aqueous solutions to improve interfacial bonding strength with epoxy matrix. The surface characteristics of the carbon fibers were observed by FT-IR, XPS, AFM and SEM. The interfacial bond strengths in epoxy matrix were measurement from single-fiber push-out test. As a result, each oxidation treatments of carbon fibers led to the improvement of the mechanical interfacial properties of the composites. |
