Four perylene-based dyes containing methoxy groups were synthesized for be used as colorants of liquid crystal display (LCD) color filters. The synthesized dyes each have 0, 2, or 4 methoxy groups at bay- and terminal-positions. The fluorescence of synthesized dyes decreased as the number of methoxy groups increased. Dye-based color filters were fabricated using the synthesized dyes in low color content concentration to minimize the effect of the aggregation. The minimum brightness of the fabricated color filters also decreased with the increasing number of methoxy groups. In conclusion, the minimum brightness can be increased by the fluorescence of the dye, however, the dyes showing strong fluorescence are not acceptable for use as colorants in high-contrast LCD color filters. |
