제목 Catalytic conversion of brown seaweed-derived alginate to its monomers and value-added chemicals
초록 Macroalgae is considered as promising biomass resource due to its advantage such as easy of cultivation, fast growth rate and lignin-free. Alginate, one of the main constituents of brown seaweed, is a carbohydrate polymer comprised of two monomers (mannuronic acids and guluronic acids) via β-1,4-glycosidic bond similar with monosaccharides linkages in polysaccharides. Alginate was hydrothermally decomposed into its monomers, furfural and 2-furoic acid over acid catalytic conditions. Catalytic performance was compared between H2SO4 and Amberlyst15. H2SO4 showed higher selectivity for production of monomers, whereas Amberlyst15 promoted the yields of furfural and 2-furoic acid. In addition, biphasic system was introduced to promote the furfural production. After reactions, degree of polymerization of alginate was obtained by GPC to verify molecular weight distributions. Qualitative analysis of the reaction products in liquid phase was carried out by LC-MS. All the products were quantified by HPLC.
