Agar is an unbranched polysaccharide obtained from the cell membranes of some species of red algae. The chemical structure of agar is characterized by the repeating unit of D-galactose and 3,6-anhydro-L-galactose, and it also has sulfate group. Sulfated polymers, including natural and synthesized ones, had great blood-compatibility or even anticoagulant activity. In this study, agar sulfate was prepared by introduce sulfate group into agar-agar composition using chlorosulfonic acid in formamide. Its gelation property due to thermal hysteresis characteristics was observed on various degree of sulfonation. The structure of agar sulfate was characterized by FT-IR, C-NMR, sulfur meter and elemental analyzer. The average molecular weight was measured by GPC |
