Encapsulation-Free Highly Air-Stable Monolayer WS2 Using Graphene Substrate |

The research of highly stable TMDs materials even after long-term exposure under ambient conditions has started to attract great attention very recently for their practical utilization. In this work, we report the new role of graphene substrates in prohibiting the aging propagation in both the basal planes and edges of two-dimensitional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) flakes. In contrast to the common short-term degradation of TMD flakes grown on SiO2/Si substrate (representatively, WS2/SiO2) observed in a recent report, even after 1 years in ambient air conditions, the epitaxially grown WS2/graphene samples have a clean, uniform surface without any encapsulation. Using various characterization tools and on the basis of previous reports, we show that the high crystallinity and extremely low defect concentration is critical factor for the high air stability of WS2/Gr by suggesting reliable evidences of the relation between defect and aging propagation. In addition, we propose that charge transfer-induced doping have an reliable effect on preventing the air degradation for the first time. This work demonstrates a simple method to create highly stable TMDs by the selection of a suitable substrate and the novel way for the realization of practical TMDs-based applications. |
