Organic photovoltaics have attracted much attention as lightweight, low-cost solar cells. Taking into account the energy conversion process, it is important to understand the hierarchical structure in organic solar cells ranging from molecule-scale to domain-scale structure to realize efficient charge separation, transfer, and extraction. However, most of research has so far focused on the domain-level structure such as crystallinity, domain size, and domain orientation because there have been no clear-cut method to characterize such molecule-level structure. We have performed GISAXS and SANS measurements to obtain information on the domain-size nanostructure as well as PSoXS, which has recently been developed, to measure the molecular orientation. In this presentation, the overall view on the relationship between multiscale nanostrucuture and device performance will be given. These fundamental characterizations would give us new insight to fabricate efficient organic solar cells. |
