Cross-linked poly acrylate is one of the most used super absorbent polymers (SAP) due to its excellent swelling and mechanical properties. Recently the need of biodegradable SAP has been emerged because of the environmental problems. To improve its biodegradability, hybrid SAP was synthesized by grafting acrylic acid (AA) on to sodium alginate (SA) backbone. Alginate is polysaccharide biopolymer extracted from brown algae, showing a good biodegradability as well as exceptional water absorbency. In this study, the structure of alginate-g-PAA was characterized by FT-IR and SEM. The absorbency of saline water was tested as a function of the SA ratio to AA and pH value. |
